Lesbian couples
In Spain the law gives homosexual couples the same rights as heterosexual couples and therefore there is no impediment in place to prohibit two women from fulfilling their wish to have children.
Depending on the age of the woman who wishes to become pregnant, either artificial insemination (AI) or in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with sperm from an anonymous donor (from the Sperm Bank) can be carried out.
Another possibility is fertilising the eggs of one of the women with sperm from an anonymous donor and transferring the embryos obtained into her partner so that it is she who will carry the pregnancy. This may be the only solution for women who want to become pregnant but do not have viable eggs that can be fertilised.
Otherwise, it may be necessary to resort to using embryos from eggs from an anonymous donor fertilised with sperm from the Sperm Bank.
Regardless of the reproductive technique used to get pregnant, both women have all rights and obligations over the child, according to the legislation in force in Spain.
