History and experience
The CEFER Reproduction Institute is an interdisciplinary, private medical centre that is dedicated to studying and treating human reproduction problems.
It began in 1977 by founding the first Sperm Bank in Spain.
In 1982, it began performing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and is a pioneering centre in this technique.
By 1993, it was already operating an egg donation programme.
That same year, semen washing for HIV (AIDS virus) positive men was begun in order for couples to achieve a pregnancy without the risk of infecting the other partner. The CEFER Reproduction Institute was the first in Spain and the second world-wide to develop this technique.
In 1999, Dr. Simón Marina published the first study in the world on a simple method for obtaining spermatozoids in paraplegic men who do not ejaculate.
At the end of 2001, the CEFER Reproduction Institute founded the first Egg Bank in Spain.
Other outstanding aspects of the daily happenings at the CEFER Institute are meiotic chromosome studies in collaboration with Dr. Egozcue and the systematic application of the FISH technique on spermatozoids to find out whether their chromosome content is correct.
Increased use of the IVF-ICSI technique and the availability of an Embryo Bank are other facts that demonstrate the experience of the CEFER Institute in the field of Human Reproduction.
